The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the US surprised everyone by announcing the USX-1 Defiant, the world’s first unmanned ship.
The ship, part of the NOMARS project (No Manning Required Ship), was created by the agency in partnership with the company Serco North America.
At 55 meters long and 240 tons, the ship is slightly smaller than typical US vessels, but authorities assure that it is as powerful as the others.
The NOMARS initiative aims to rethink traditional ship design by creating an unmanned platform from scratch, eliminating the considerations typically required for human operators.
This means that inside, the ship does not have accommodations, hallways, fans, stairs, accessways, or workspaces that are normally needed to house a human crew.
It is important to note that this is just a prototype and is not yet operational. The first tests of the USX-1 Defiant are expected to begin in a few weeks, according to Interesting Engineering.
